Couplings

Extensive experience over a large range of different types of couplings, allows BTS to match the correct product for your application.  BTS carries emergency stocks in Durban and can procure your requirement within one working day.

Buffer Couplings

Bay Transmission Services are suppliers of a range of buffer couplings manufactured by Svenborg brakes of Germany. Damping is aided by the use of rubber compounds, with different shore hardnesses, labelled red, green, yellow or white, which, dependent on the colour type are resistant in varying degrees to compression set, flexing, cutting, abrasion, oxidation, acids, water swelling, oil and gasoline.

Svenborg features three types of buffer couplings, the RB, PM and DCB ranges. The RB range is the general purpose category, the pm range is for heavy duty industrial applications, while the DCB range is of very high quality with excellent endurance capability. All three ranges have misalignment capability, no backlash, low lifetime costs amongst other benefits.
The RB range is available in either shaft to shaft of flywheel to shaft configurations and has a maximum torque of 41knm. It is used in generators and pump sets, compressors, metal manufacturing, bulk handling, pulp and paper industry and general heavy duty industrial applications.

The PM range is designed to withstand severe shock loads and vibration and has a maximum torque of 6 000knm. It is also used in the same applications as the RB type, as well as mining, fans, cranes and hoists.

The DCB range is suitable for marine propulsion, high power generator sets, and reciprocal compressors. It has a maximum torque of 520knm

Disc Couplings

The Altra Bibby Turboflex Disc Coupling has many advantages over the more traditional coupling types. As a high speed, heavy duty, environmentally sensitive dry Disc Coupling, it requires no lubrication, has no wearing parts, no backlash or power loss, is maintenance free and offers misalignment capabilities.

Where the Disc Coupling may cost more, the following case study undertaken by Bay Transmission Services demonstrated this was recouped in a relatively short period.

The case study was located at paper mill in KZN where the two gear couplings (BG55GFD) fitted to a Carden shaft on the dryer feed roll of the newsprint machine, were replaced by a Bibby Turboflex HBS5300-8. The drive for the dryer feed roll was misaligned by 20mm and the gear coupling on the roll side was exposed to superheated steam.

During each monthly shutdown, the gear couplings were maintained by outside contractors (a direct cost) and after every 6th shutdown the gear coupling halves were replaced.

A detailed cost analysis showed that the Turboflex spacer coupling paid for itself within two years when compared to the replacement price and maintenance costs for the gear couplings, a reduction in the risk of failure was reduced to a minimum while downtime to replace 1 geared coupling was 4 to 6 hours.
In the majority of the applications, the spacers are custom made for existing lengths.

E-Flex Couplings

The Bibby E-Flex Pin & Bush couplings – suitable for both vertical and horizontal operations - are non-lubricated couplings that accept parallel, angular and axial misalignment. The use of flexible elements – 80 or standard 90 shore hardness, makes them suitable for applications where shock absorption and vibration reduction are required.

The assembly of e-flex couplings is simple, requiring only a spanner and allen key. Routine maintenance comprises alignment checks and occasional inspection for element/bush wear, the changing of which only takes a few minutes. Parallel or taper bore alternatives are available.
From size 72 – 380 coupling hubs are made of steel. Larger sizes are available in steel, cast or sg iron. The size of coupling determines the maximum bore size as well as the number of pins and bushes used. For example, the smallest, size 72, has a maximum bore size of 20mm and is only available with 2 or 4 pins & bushes, whereas a much larger size such as the 630 has a maximum bore of 240mm and can be obtained with 8, 12 or 16 pins & bushes.

These couplings are available with brake drums, discs, spacers, are flexible and handle end float.

Gear Couplings

Bay Transmission Services specializes in Bibby gear couplings as well as the equivalent Ameridrive gear coupling range. The half coupling assemblies of these two brands are interchangeable as are any other half gear couplings manufactured to AGMA (American gear manufacturers association) standards.

These gear couplings are designed for high capacity loads as the hub teeth are engineered with a crowned tooth form to provide maximum contact at the strongest part of the tooth.

Bibby / Ameridrive double engagement gear couplings accommodate parallel and angular misalignment as well as axial movement. (the single engagement couplings allow only for angular misalignment and axial movement.)

A number of the standard range of gear couplings can be mounted vertically as well as horizontally, while a comprehensive range of specialised designs can be supplied, namely: shear pin gear coupling, disc brake and brake drum gear couplings, limited end float, high misalignment and disengaging types, mill spindle design and gear couplings combined with torque limiting modules.
